REFLECTION (100 words): Mental Aspect of Man
1. What is your view of the mental aspect of man?
I believe that man’s mental aspect constitutes a huge portion of who he is as a person in totality. It includes ideas, feelings, and consciousness that we can harbor as individuals in existence. More to that, it shapes how we perceive and view things, aiding us in our decision-making skills whenever we are faced with circumstances that need critical thinking. We must remember that our mental aspect should not be taken lightly, and instead be filled with care and nurturing. As much as it aids us in things that we do, it is also our duty to uphold its well-being.

REFLECTION: Silliman University Motto
Eojjann S. Tuñacao
GE 10 – BBEver heard of a school’s motto that resonates with you? A distinguished university known for its dedication to academic quality and volunteerism, Silliman University is situated in Dumaguete City, Philippines. It is an American university in the Philippines and a representation of high-caliber instruction in the area. In recapitulation, Silliman University was established in 1901. The guiding principles of Silliman University are reflected in the school’s motto, “Via, Veritas, Vita.”
Christian theology attaches great importance to the Latin phrase “Via, Veritas, Vita,” which is taken from John 14:6 of the New Testament. It asserts that Jesus is the personification of these three essential elements, encapsulating the core principles of Christian theology. Jesus is referred to as “the Way” by the word “Via,” which expresses the notion that He is the route to redemption and eternal life, acting as a link between humanity and God. He gives people direction and guidance in their spiritual journeys through His teachings and sacrifice. Furthermore, in this context, it stresses that His teachings and message are the ultimate truth, functioning as a source of heavenly wisdom and moral direction. As such, “Veritas” claims that Jesus is “the Truth.” The core of God’s purpose and goal for humanity is revealed in his life and words. Lastly, through trust in Him, people can experience spiritual life and the totality of existence, according to “Vita,” which declares that Jesus is “the Life.” He is the source of eternal life, giving believers the assurance of both salvation and bodily resurrection.
“Via, Veritas, Vita” as Silliman University’s motto lives within me. Reminiscing on the times when I first heard it being uttered by a fellow senior like any other person would do, I was curious about what it meant and how it relates to the school’s principles and values. Without hesitance, I searched for it right away and right there I was relieved of my confusion. “Via, Veritas, Vita,” immediately conjures up feelings of purpose and enlightenment. It resonates and echoes the volumes of the immense portrayal of the message made by the University’s dedication to education and the quest for truth and knowledge. Even though Latin was chosen as the medium of language, it does not in a way hinder what Silliman University wanted to reflect upon, and that is through its commitment to academic achievement together with becoming a leading Christian institution that shares and voices the message and word of God.
In all honesty, I am intrigued and impressed to learn that the motto of Silliman University is “Via, Veritas, Vita”. The Latin phrase “The Way, The Truth, The Life,” which means these things, has a strong resonance since it conjures up the quest for knowledge, truth, and a fulfilling life. Focusing on the path to academic and personal progress instills a feeling of direction and purpose. Promoting a dedication to finding one’s true self and beliefs is widely applicable. It serves as a reminder that education encompasses more than simply learning new information; it also involves discovering one’s real calling and living a happy life. Since it encourages individuals to go on their own journeys of self-discovery, its profound message is simple to comprehend. As a result, I also want to say that as a Christian, I find it quite meaningful to know that Silliman University’s slogan is “Via, Veritas, Vita”. It represents the central tenet of my religion, which is that Jesus is “The Way, The Truth, and The Life” (John 14:6). It serves as a compelling reminder of the tenets of Christianity that have guided my life, highlighting the search for spiritual truth and eternal life in Christ.
Consequently, the motto of Silliman University, “Via, Veritas, Vita,” skillfully combines the pursuit of knowledge with an acknowledgment of the veracity of God’s Word. The idea that learning and religion may coexist peacefully and that the road to wisdom and truth is a heavenly trip are both stressed by this slogan. It challenges us to recognize that education is a tool for discovering basic truths about the world and God’s Word in addition to just learning facts. As the slogan of Silliman University constantly and wonderfully reminds us, our quest for knowledge and our spiritual journey are connected and equally significant in our quest for meaningful and purposeful living. May the slogan “Via, Veritas, Vita” accompany us on our journey through life and serve as a constant reminder for us.

REFLECTION ESSAY:
Paul’s Letter to the Romans (Chapters 4, 5, and 6)Reading may be part of our daily lives. When we read, we can learn new concepts, and it cultivates a sense of applying what we have gathered in our day-to-day living. Putting this into thought can then stem an initial reaction that flicking through the pages of the Book of Romans is essential as it teaches us how putting our trust in Jesus is the path toward a good relationship with God. The Book of Romans emphasizes that the gift we dearly receive is salvation. It was addressed to the Romans by the apostle Paul, who provided helpful advice on leading a life that aligns with Christian values. As such, the letter offers a robust framework for comprehending Christian doctrine, including significant topics like God’s justice, grace, and the place of non-Jewish people (Gentiles) in God’s purpose.
As I have read through Romans Chapters 1, 2, and 3 within the previous weeks, it is now the time to venture on to succeeding chapters, particularly Romans Chapters 4, 5, and 6. Romans Chapter 4 tells us that strengthening and broadening our faith in God is more significant than doing good deeds toward others or within our community in hopes of being under God’s good graces. Furthermore, this chapter also looks forward for us to believe in God’s promises and to hold onto them even when, at times, we seem unsure because of dire circumstances that we are constantly facing. It puts an understanding that having faith reconciles us to God and encourages us to be like Abraham, who trusted in God’s provisions despite the conflicting situations he was put in.
In Romans Chapter 4, I reflected upon recognizing that my relationship with God should be anchored on putting my faith in Him and always sticking and believing in His promises set toward the trajectory of my life. At all times, I should not only be considering how I spread goodness in this physical world but, instead, allowing myself to firmly associate with God’s love and direction. Like Abraham, I will continuously work on letting God rule my life; whatever He has in store for me, I will accept it with all my heart.
On the other hand, Romans Chapter 5 connects to Chapter 4. Romans Chapter 5 highlights the lesson that having faith reconciles us to God and gives us a sense of hope and encouragement. It is a message directed at emphasizing how God’s love through letting us feel His grace is ever-sufficient and overwhelming in a way that fills us with much ease. More so, this chapter reminds us that, as humans, we can commit sins, just like how sin entered the world through Adam. However, even with this occurrence, God’s love remains steadfast in securing us and placing things right and in order. In summary, Romans 5 encourages us to put our faith in God’s love for a more contented and optimistic journey.
In Romans Chapter 5, I reflected upon realizing that when we put our hearts to God, we can feel satisfaction and contentment in our existence, even when faced with trials. We cannot lie that in every scenario, there is always that situation where sometimes we may feel troubled, but because we are comforted in knowing that God is always there for us, we turn this negativity into a better view of life and try to put a happy smile. Within this, Romans Chapter 5 is all about having that trust and confidence in God’s unending love, making our life journey unforgettable.
Lastly, Romans Chapter 6 is seemingly all about an underlying bold declaration that our gratefulness should be directed to Christ, as we are free from sin and can live a new life through Him. Even though, in some cases, we really cannot underestimate the power of temptation as it draws us near to sin, it transpires in keeping us in check of knowing and bearing the evidence to witness that we can act in a way that demonstrates we are not in no way powerless over the forces of sin that may penetrate us. Chapter 6 strongly asserts that we have the ability, through Christ, to walk in God’s path. Bearing this understanding, this chapter makes us aware of how our past transgressions do not shape our current identities but rather our developing or already firm relationship with Christ.
In Romans Chapter 6, I reflected upon clearing the haze that I initially had and making it clear within me that when we acknowledge and decide to have Christ as the center of our lives, it can provide us with limitless capabilities or power to overcome the hold that sin has over us. We can put this in a way that, as a Christian, I shall continuously abide by the Church that I deem fit and acceptable within the eyes of the Lord. According to this thought, our relationship with Christ, which molds us into the people we were meant to be, defines our identity rather than our faults.
Therefore, the Book of Romans, particularly in Chapters 4, 5, and 6, constantly partake us with the understanding of the following: Chapter 4 tells us that it is our confidence in God, like Abraham’s trust in Him, and not only our deeds that make us suitable with Him; Chapter 5 highlights the hope and serenity that come through believing in Jesus while highlighting how much greater God’s love is than the repercussions of sin; lastly Chapter 6 concludes by reiterating that through Christ, we are set free from the grip of sin and learn who we indeed are in Him, empowering us to live a life of obedience to God. These chapters collectively highlight that having a relationship with God depends on trust in Jesus. It underlines God’s love’s capacity for transformation and faith’s ability to deliver liberation from sin.
