    DID YOU KNOW? Silliman University established the first law school in the Philippines outside Metro Manila (1935). The college is housed in the Villareal Hall building, named after one of its notable alumni.       GOOD NEWS: DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) is currently doing a research with promising results on the antiviral properties of coconut oil against SARS COV 2 or COVID-19. The active chemical components derived from the coconut oil that is responsible for its antiviral properties are lauric acid and its derivative monolaurin. There are three ways these chemical compounds can manifest their antiviral properties: these chemicals can disrupt the replicative cycle of SARS-COV2 and other viruses by specifically inhibiting the maturation stage; they can also potentially disintegrate the membranous envelope that coats the nucleocapsid (genome + capsid) leaving the thin, vulnerable capsid exposed to the external environment; and third, the chemical can prevent the viral protein from binding to the ACE2 receptors located on the host cell’s plasma membrane (Dayrit & Newport, 2020).         CAMPUS TRIVIA: The Silliman Main Library and the Luce Auditorium are one of the major landmarks to see in Silliman University. Both edifices exude a brutalist design. Brutalist architecture originated in France. The style was heavily popularized in the Philippines during the Marcos dictatorship when the former president erected extravagant brutalist buildings (e.g. CCP and Manila Film Center) . While brutalist architecture certainly is not everyone\'s cup of tea because of its harsh aura, Silliman certainly makes brutalist likable by contrasting it with the university\'s lush, green grounds.
