GOOD NEWS: DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) is currently doing a research with promising results on the antiviral properties of coconut oil against SARS COV 2 or COVID-19. The active chemical components derived from the coconut oil that is responsible for its antiviral properties are lauric acid and its derivative monolaurin. There are three ways these chemical compounds can manifest their antiviral properties: these chemicals can disrupt the replicative cycle of SARS-COV2 and other viruses by specifically inhibiting the maturation stage; they can also potentially disintegrate the membranous envelope that coats the nucleocapsid (genome + capsid) leaving the thin, vulnerable capsid exposed to the external environment; and third, the chemical can prevent the viral protein from binding to the ACE2 receptors located on the host cell’s plasma membrane (Dayrit & Newport, 2020).
