After reading the required chapter, I can see that there was a lot of thought and care in establishing the components and responsibilities of risk management and safety inside a laboratory. Establishments must specifically write standard operating procedures to cover the handling of specimens, risk assessments, and other health and safety information. It also covers first aid measures if accidents happen in the laboratory to prevent further damage to property and personnel, such as:
The following precautions should be taken while administering first aid to a person who has been exposed to hazardous, infectious, or chemical waste products:
– Personnel should move the person to clean air immediately after being removed from the source of pollution.– Personnel should avoid using mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-nose ventilation if the patient is not breathing due to the risk to the rescuer. Use a resuscitation bag and mask instead.
– Start an external cardiac massage with no pulse and proceed to standard Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) procedures.
– If available, provide 100% oxygen through a mask.
– Put all contaminated garments and shoes in a container we can seal.
– Place contaminated garments in a collection bag and do a thorough wash.
