Muscle tissue is made up of cells with the unique ability to shorten or contract in response to the movement of body parts. The tissue is densely cellular and well-vascularized. Because the cells are long and slender, they are occasionally referred to as muscle fibers, and they are typically organized in bundles or layers surrounded by connective tissue. Actin and myosin are contractile muscle proteins.

Muscle fibers in the skeleton are cylindrical, multinucleated, striated, and voluntary. Smooth muscle cells are spindle-shaped, lack striations, and have a single central nucleus. These are referred to as involuntary muscles. Cardiac muscle comprises branching fibers, single nuclei in each cell, striations, and intercalated disks. Its contraction is not controlled voluntarily.
