The skin, hair, nails, and exocrine glands comprise the integumentary system. Among these organs, the skin is the largest external organ of the human body. It protects our bodies from chemicals, illness, UV radiation, and physical injury by covering and acting as a protective barrier. It is made up of three layers: the dermis, the epidermis, and the hypodermis.
The epidermis is the skin’s outermost layer, which serves as a barrier and determines the color of our skin. Beneath the epidermis is the dermis which contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands. The bottom layer of the skin is a fatty layer called the hypodermis, which regulates body temperature and cushions the muscle and bones.
