The integumentary system is the body’s largest organ, establishing a physical barrier between the exterior and inside to protect and maintain the internal environment. The following are the roles of each component of the integumentary system:

1. Scalp – serves as a place for hair to grow and a physical barrier to protect the body from unwanted irritants.

2. Sweat glands – also termed sudoriferous glands, help the body stay cool. Sweat glands on the skin’s surface secrete perspiration to cool the skin when the body temperature rises.

3. Hair follicles – can retain stem cells, increase cell proliferation and tissue invasion, and induce angiogenesis.
