Thus, dubbed as the “real digestion” takes place. The intestines occupies most space in the abdominal cavity of one’s system and accounts the greatest portion of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in terms of mass and length. The final digestion which takes place in the small intestine is aided by numerous tissues residing in the space. The general structure of the digestive tract in the small intestine comprises of the wall that has a mucosa with simple columnar epithelium, submucosa, smooth muscle with inner circular and outer longitudinal layers, and serosa.
