Medical Histology Art – MT 30 Lab C (2022) 3 years, 8 months ago The digestive system intakes food, digests and absorbs nutrients, and excretes waste. Your alimentary tract is lined with epithelium and begins in the oral cavity to the pharynx, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus via a rhythmic contraction called peristalsis. The ileum aids in the subsequent digestion of food passed through the stomach and other sections of the small intestine. It ingests nutrients and water from meals, preparing them for utilization by the body.
The appendix has an unknown purpose. According to one theory, the appendix works as a reservoir for good bacteria, “rebooting” the digestive system following diarrheal illnesses.
The large intestine has three primary functions: water and electrolyte absorption, vitamin production and absorption, and feces formation and propulsion toward the rectum for excretion.
