    Five Layers of Skin (Integumentary System)

    Location: The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, the dermis and the deeper subcutaneous tissue.

    Function:
    Stratum Corneum- outermost epidermal layer consist of dead cells and is prevents unwanted materials from entering, and excessive loss of water from exiting the body.

    Stratum Lucidum- a thin layer of dead cells, responsible for the capability of the skin to stretch.

    Stratum Granulosum- contains diamond shaped cells with keratohyalin which helps to form a waterproof barrier that functions in preventing fluid loss from the body.

    Stratum Spinosum- contains desmosomes that appear a spiky membrane projections that is responsible for skin’s strength and flexibility.

    Stratum Basale-innermost layer of the epidermis, known to be as home to melanocytes that produce melanin.
