When we chew and swallow, digestion begins in the mouth and ends in the small intestine. The chemical process differs slightly depending on the type of food. This is my histology art for digestive system tissues that shows the microscopic view of ileum, stomach, and proximal colon. The following are the roles of each component of the digestive system:
1. Ileum – The ileum is the small intestine’s last section. It attaches to the cecum (first part of the large intestine). The ileum aids in the digestion of food that has passed through the stomach and other portions of the small intestine.
2. Stomach – The function of your stomach is to digest food and transport it to your small intestine. It serves three purposes: it can temporarily store food. To combine and break down food, contract and relax.
3. Proximal Colon – Its job is to dehydrate and shape the remaining food into feces. It accomplishes this by gently collecting water and electrolytes as the waste is moved along by its muscle system.
