The lungs and a branching system of bronchial tubes connect the locations of gas exchange with the external environment as respiratory organs. A ventilation system composed of the thoracic cage, intercostal muscles, diaphragm, and elastic lung tissue moves air through the lungs. Furthermore, the respiratory system is anatomically separated into upper and lower respiratory tracts. The mucosa of the nasal cavities and the conducting section of the system is lined with ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium.
