MT 30 – IJ (LEC) 3 years, 7 months ago Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are rare diseases, however, the magnitude of increased mortality is a significant public health issue that has not been addressed. After reading this article, I was able to realize and recognize the need for routine health checks and specialized health promotion for those with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Physical health issues must be better recognized and incorporated with psychiatric treatment in mental health care. Those with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder need access to high-quality health treatment, and stigma and discrimination towards people with mental illnesses must be eliminated. People with serious mental problems’ life expectancy should be included as a standard performance indicator in health-care systems.

Despite recent attention to excess mortality among people with schizophrenia and bipolar illness, this study shows that people with these disorders still have a significantly shorter life expectancy. Schizophrenia and bipolar illness patients are a vulnerable group of individuals that require specific care. This category of patients has an unacceptable high mortality rate, even in Nordic nations with well-developed social and public health systems. It is currently necessary to assess why they have high death rates and what may be done to increase their life expectancy.
