Our sexes has a role in our cardiac physiology and even in its response to heart diseases. Since structure determines function, our cells and tissues also play in an important role for our heart’s response to cardiac diseases. In the face of cardiac disease, women have greater cardiac function and survival than men; however, this sex advantage is eliminated when comparing postmenopausal women to age-matched males. It is our sex steroid hormones that contribute to these differences in disease outcomes. Estrogen is known to be cardioprotective, while testosterone, meanwhile, is thought to be damaging to heart health. It can be pretty alarming when men read this and a bit pleasing for women. However this alone is not enough since cardiac diseases also have other factors to be considered. While this is a scientific study, it is still important that regardless of biological sex, we must still take care of our hearts and its structure.
