We already know that cardiovascular tissue has a vital role in circulating blood for the transport of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, blood cells, and hormones, in maintaining the homeostasis of the human body, am I right? And last semester we were taught that sudden cardiac arrest is a common cause of death and persistent neurological dysfunction thereafter. Extracorporeal life support systems are increasingly used to stabilize circulation during cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. With that, in this journal, they studied how the available treatment affects the histological changes of the tissues in our circulatory system. We can read in this study histological changes of the myocardium in pigs were assessed, which were treated within different scenarios of cardiac arrest, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, extracorporeal life support systems, and controlled reperfusion of the whole body. Mind you, friends, the result will amaze you. Did you know that during the first reported clinical application of controlled reperfusion after cardiac arrest, the implementation of controlled reperfusion resulted in unexpected survival and recovery after prolonged normothermic cardiac arrest and CPR? In synopsis with the preclinical experience in pigs, this case shows, that the new concept of controlled reperfusion treating ischemia/reperfusion during the CPR may be an important element within the future treatment of cardiac arrest.
