The cervix is the uterus’s tubular extremity that exits into the vaginal opening. It has a different structure than the uterus’s body and fundus.
• Mucosa – It is not lost after menstruation, unlike the remainder of the uterus.
• Endocervix – The cervical canal’s wall is formed by the endocervix.
• Simple Columnar Epithelium – The mucus-secreting cells of the Simple Columnar Epithelium are continuous with the uterine body’s lining.
• Cervical Glands – in the lamina propria, branching glands of mucus-secreting cells.
• Ectocervix (or exocervix) – a portion of the cervix that protrudes into the vaginal canal (portio vaginalis) and houses the uterus’ entrance (external os).
• Transformation Zone – a sharp transition between the endocervix’s mucus-secreting columnar epithelium and the ectocervix’s squamous epithelium.
• Nabothian Cysts form when stratified squamous epithelium develops over mucus-secreting simple columnar epithelium, trapping huge volumes of mucus.
