Urothelium is stratified epithelium. Transitional epithelium changes shape when stressed (stretchable epithelium). Transitional epithelium is cuboidal when relaxed and squamous when stretched. Due to its location in the excretory system, particularly the ureters and urinary bladder, this tissue acts as an impermeable barrier to water and most small molecules. Because it’s mostly in the bladder, ureters, and urethra, it’s called urothelium.
