The picture below shows a colored light micrograph of a section through a penis, which also shows the three subsections it has. The two large subsections at the left and right are the corpora cavernosa. The section below them or the section at the lower center is the corpus spongiosum.

The Penis is composed of three cylinders that are spongy; these three cylinders consist of a single corpus spongiosum and a paired corpora cavernosa. When it comes to the corpora cavernosa, its crural roots attach to the under the surface of the ischiopubic rami, being two separate structures. This structure prevents the penis from sinking into the perineum when faced with a compressive load during intercourse. However, this arrangement also has downsides since it places the penile crus in danger in terms of crush injuries from blunt perineal trauma.

The penis is considered to be the most output of sperm and urine. It is a structure that is subjected to the control of complex reflexes, humoral control, and neuronal control. It has numerous aggregations of tissue that are “cavernous.” Under certain conditions, it can become engorged with blood, making the penis rigid. Through this, the penis can deliver the genetic material contained in the sperm during coitus.
