      Within the matrix of elastic cartilage, chondrocytes are distributed in a threadlike network of elastic fibers. Elastic cartilage offers strength and elasticity while also keeping some structures, such as the external ear, in form.

      Elastic cartilage provides modest elasticity in support. It is mostly present in the larynx, the external section of the ear (pinna), and the tube that connects the middle of the ear to the throat (eustachian or auditory tube).
