These follicles remain dormant until they receive activation signals or a negative regulatory factor is eliminated. Primordial follicles were surrounded by a single layer of flattened granulosa cells, whereas expanding follicles had the appearance of being bordered by one or more cuboidal granulosa cells, including primary, secondary, preantral, and antral follicles. In addition, the single layer of squamous epithelial cells encircling the oocyte within the cortex identifies the primordial follicles. Note that the oocyte is a big cell with a conspicuous nucleolus and a huge nucleus.
