The ovaries are responsible for oocyte production through a process called oogenesis and the secretion of female sex hormones namely estrogen and progesterone.

When the ovary releases a mature ovum, it travels towards the oviduct down to the uterus. The outer region called the Cortex is the site of development of the oocyte. It has a CAPSULE that functions to cover the outer surface of the ovary. The capsule is lined with a simple cuboidal epithelium and has a dense irregular connective tissue layer supporting the epithelium.
