They CANNOT provide oxygen to the blood. Again, ventilators simply aid with breathing work. They are utilized for a short period of time while a person is asleep and immobilized for surgery. They are utilized when a person has a curable lung pathology and is tired or experiencing trouble breathing. Only a respirator is capable of exchanging gases in the blood. The heart-lung machine has an example of a respirator.
