Ventilators assist in the function of the heart. At a specific flow rate, volume, and pressure, they can provide humidified and supplementary oxygen. That is all they are capable of. They CANNOT provide oxygen to the blood. Again, ventilators simply aid with breathing work. They are utilized for a short period of time while a person is asleep and immobilized for surgery. They are utilized when a person has a curable lung pathology and is tired or experiencing trouble breathing. Only a respirator is capable of exchanging gases in the blood. The heart-lung machine has an example of a respirator.
