Hi everyone! I hope everyone is taking a breather after this whirlwind of a semester.

I would just like to share this article I found on a Horseshoe Crab’s (aka Xiphosura) complex circulatory system.

Göpel, T., & Wirkner, C. S. (2015, August). An “ancient” complexity?/ Evolutionary morphology of the circulatory system in Xiphosura. PubMed. Retrieved from https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25964110/

    • We encounter various species of animals and plants every day, yet humanity is yet to discover even half of them. As we progress, we overcome the impossible and continue learning more about the creatures that roam this planet with us. Take this arthropod, the Horseshoe Crab, also known as the Xiphosura. It’s undergone study for almost 200 years, yet we are yet to discover all there is to know about it. Though it has apparent differences in the anatomy, histology, and overall aspect of its circulatory system, the same system in humans has the same objective. Whether it’s an open circulatory system that pumps blood into a cavity called a hemocoel, where it surrounds the organs before returning to the heart(s) via ostia (openings), like in arthropods; or it transports wastes and supplies oxygen and nutrients to cells. On opposite sides of the heart, oxygenated and deoxygenated blood is pumped like humans. Both systems work to keep us alive. And I find that amazing that no matter how we, of different species, could share a similarity of connection such as this.
