The risks associated with working in a histopathology laboratory include the following:
1. Chemical Hazards
– Working in a laboratory involves handling different kinds of chemicals to use as reagents, disinfectants, solvents, etc.
2. Physical Hazards
– These are hazards that occur mostly because of human error or mishaps. Such as slipping or falling from work locations. Ergonomic hazards are also often encountered in the laboratory because of the extensive hours that a laboratorian spends doing repetitive tasks.
3. Electrical Hazards
– Since the laboratory is composed of many different types of machines to perform different kinds of tests and experiments, electrical hazards are not foreign. These can be electric shocks, arc blasts, and electrocution that may stem from faulty wiring and the likes.
4. Biological Hazards
– The specimens that we handle in the laboratory are what we refer to as biohazards.-
Based on what I read from the book by Bruce-Gregorios, these are the hazards that we can often encounter when working in the laboratory. With this in mind, we should always observe utmost caution in order to avoid the risks that comes with our job as laboratorians as much as possible. Precautionary measures include wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment, always being mindful of the task at hand, as well as always observing the universal precaution which is to “treat all specimens as potentially infectious.”
