Histopathology laboratory safety during the pandemic has several challenges, and this study entitled, “The challenges and risk of laboratory handling on a histology specimen during the COVID-19 pandemic” shows and discusses these issues. Critical points are reviewed and summarized below. For added information, here is the link to the study:

    • The sudden global spread of COVID-19 has caused widespread panic. The number of confirmed cases has skyrocketed as a result of the virus’s rapid spread. It has caused a global public health crisis and the breakdown of healthcare systems everywhere.
      • Histopathology services are among the many areas of medicine that have been impacted. Threats and potential for viral transmission can arise from a number of different directions and on different scales. In several instances of COVID-19 testing, the specimens were infected by people whose statuses were not known, despite the fact that the testing subjects had no direct contact with the material.
        • It is speculated that inactivated viruses, maybe a coronavirus, are present in the fixatives used for histopathology specimens. However, safeguards must be in place to protect laboratory workers from contracting an infection while handling cytology samples, particularly those that are underfixed or freshly frozen.

          • Thus, I believe histopathology services require additional precautions, including the use of full PPE and the implementation of other customary safety measures.
