Social learning theory does provide explanation on how people learn from others and suggests ways to incorporate effective elements into different circumstances. One of its disadvantages is the fact that it is not a model for how everyone will behave; rather, it is a guide that can predict behavior.

Some criticisms of social learning theory emphasis on the environment as the primary influence on behavior. To describe behavior solely in terms of nature or nurture is limiting, and attempts to do so underestimate the complexity of human behavior.
