Lecture remains a crucial activity in higher education learning. However, its value is being challenged as innovative means of learning arise.
Alex Amartei Marmah’s research aims to assess undergraduate students’ perception of lecture. The study revealed that there is a statistical significant difference between full-time students and with regards to their age. These undergraduates differ from the negative perception of education experts regarding the lecture method. The students learn more through the lecture. This is because the lecture provides specific facts and basic skills directly and logically. It facilitates large group discussion and maximizes the limited time. It helps non-creative students to learn by listening.
However, the lecture has limitations for higher-order thinking skills, depending on the teacher’s knowledge and skills. It can inhibit the creativity of students and pushes the students to be passive. It also lacks feedback and assumes all learners to learn equally.
Social learning theory allows flexibility in explaining the differences in a person’s behavior or learning. Modifying a learner’s environment allows the learner’s behavior to change. Moreover, it also permits learning through numerous means, such as observations.
Yet, the theory may neglect accountability in one’s behavior. Since the approach emphasizes the environment, it implies that society determines behavior and actions, not self-will. It overlooks essential developmental milestones depending on the children’s levels of maturity.
Meanwhile, Skinner\’s theory dwells on the environmental influences on people\’s behavior. He based his theory on his experiments with rats and pigeons, which he theorized as human-like creatures who behave due to the reinforcement found in their environment.
Bandura’s theory is not like any other behavioral theory. It does not share the same sentiments as other theories that suggest all behaviors are learned through conditioning and cognitive theories that only consider psychological influences such as attention and memory.
The social learning theory emphasizes the environment and its constituents that play a role in the upbringing of individuals. Children learn through their adaption of what they have witnessed growing up. It is influenced by factors, namely, attention, motivation, attitudes, and emotions.References:
