Learning InsightsHealth Information Systems, as a subject, has allowed me to understand the complexities and intricacies of the healthcare industry, particularly in the laboratory setting. I have learned that the driving force behind a successful laboratory is a systematic and integrated effort of interdisciplinary systems that ensure functionality, efficiency, and security.
Health Information Systems (HIS), as emphasized in the class, generally refer to systems that manage healthcare data to improve patient outcomes and create better policies. A great example of a healthcare system, when put in the context of the Medical Technology profession, is Laboratory Information Systems. As one of the highlights of this class, I have learned that LIS are software solutions created to aid laboratories in monitoring their equipment, samples, and test outcomes, as well as facilitating the management of their workflows and protocols.
Laboratory Quality Assurance and Quality Control are also among the highlights of this class. Laboratory quality assurance (QA) refers to a variety of procedures that allow laboratories to attain and maintain high standards of accuracy and competence despite modifications to test procedures and the number of specimens examined.
Another lesson that I will not forget is Material management. It focuses on the strategic management of materials, including their procurement, organization, and control, and ensures a smooth flow from the initial purchase stage to internal operations and ultimately to the service point through distribution. Understanding and applying Material control to real-life situations cannot be emphasized enough. It is a management tool that one must learn, even outside the context of the healthcare industry. It is a life lesson that I am grateful to have learned in this class.
As a whole, this subject allowed me to appreciate how the healthcare industry works. Behind the state-of-the-art facilities, effective laboratory procedures, and efficient management is a comprehensive system, the Health Information System, that serves as its foundation.

Importance of Material ManagementMaterial management is an essential management tool for laboratories for several reasons. For one, it guarantees that laboratories have a sufficient supply, such as reagents, chemicals, consumables, and equipment to conduct testing and research without interruption. By reducing shortages and ensuring prompt procurement, material management assists in preventing delays and challenges in laboratory workflows. Another reason is that it minimizes waste, reduces costs, and prevents overstocking, making it possible for laboratories to effectively allocate their finances and make wise purchase choices. The last reason why material management is important is that it allows for thorough material tracking and documentation, making quality control and legal compliance easier.

Android versus iOSI choose iOS over Android because of its ability to keep things simple while maintaining consistency and functionality. While it is true that Android offers more options for customization, I don’t personally see it as an advantage because I acknowledge that I am more of a user than an administrator. What does matter to me are data privacy, quality, and consistency—factors that the Apple company does best at.
Policy is generally referred to as “a statement or memo that outlines the institution’s position on an administrative or operational issue.” Policy manual, then, “contains policies that apply to the general and overall operations of the institution.”
Procedure is defined as “an instructional document that provides explanations and step-by-step directions on how to perform a task, test or process. “ Thus, procedure manual “contains procedures that apply to specific work tasks and duties.”
A process refers to a series of steps or actions taken to achieve a particular goal or outcome.
