As new infections and re-emerging diseases continue to appear, the Philippine health care system becomes more important and vital in protecting the public. Reforms in the policies and organizational structure, strengthening of programs, and creation of new programs by the government and private sector have drastically improved the Philippine health system. The continuing development and improvement of the country’s health system has helped achieve numerous milestones in public health such as improvements in life expectancy and immunization coverage, and reduction in infant and child mortality rates. However, many concerns such as disparity in healthcare accessibility is still a major problem as accumulation of hospitals in major cities becomes a major challenge for people far from the urban area (e.g., islanders and mountain people). Redistribution of health infrastructure and manpower, amendments to policies, and creation of new strategies and approach are still needed to address issues in the country’s health system.
