    (2) Philippine Health System

    • The Philippine health system is very hard to access for the less fortunate and that is the sad reality. Additionally, there is also a lack of healthcare providers, health products, healthcare facilities, and healthcare institutions. Health centers in the Philippines only can offer limited services to locals as most of them are offered in large hospitals which cannot be easily accessed by people coming from remote areas. Although the government has made efforts and attempts to address this issue, it clearly can be seen that their efforts have fallen short due to unequal access to the healthcare system. Additionally, another fact that I have deduced from the video is that the Philippines has a huge scarce when it comes to the production of pharmaceuticals which I think is the reason why local health centers often have a shortage in their medicine supply which eventually results in more people getting deprived of the help that they need.
Furthermore, the Philippine health system has private and public sectors. The private sectors are more advanced with their facilities, medical supplies, and even healthcare employees but these are only accessible to people who have huge financial capabilities as most of the services they provide are costly. However, in the public health sector, it can be accessed by less-fortunate people but most of the institutions lack the manpower and the facilities in order to carry out healthcare procedures. In the documentary, the public health sector is the one being depicted which shows the harsh reality that the Filipino masses suffer when it comes to healthcare accessibility. Public hospitals are swarmed with people each day and the lack of manpower and hospital rooms to cater to patients often leads to them being left unentertained and untreated.
As for the specifics, I watched a video made by The Savvy Expat which gave a breakdown of particular details of the Philippine health system. All Filipinos have open access to free health services as the Philippines adopted the Universal Healthcare Act a few years ago. Despite this, maximized healthcare services can only be provided by private health institutions most of the time as they are more equipped with healthcare facilities, products, and staff. However, these kinds of hospitals can only be found in big cities in the country which means that it is not accessible to all people given their location as well as their costs. Not to mention, medicine, pharmaceuticals, and treatments are too expensive for the masses here in the Philippines.
In terms of health insurance, most Filipinos often utilize and become a member of PhilHealth. A program that is established by the government that gives financial aid to people who get hospitalized. Although the program indeed is of help, the financial aid it gives cannot suffice the high costs that hospitals charge to in-patients resulting in high financial burdens for the patients. Bottomline is, healthcare in the Philippines is easily accessed by the fortunate and is almost impossible to access for the less fortunate.
