HEALTH SYSTEMS – INTRODUCTION | Public Health Lectures

    • In the video, the speaker, Rob Yates explained the important role that health systems play in providing universal health coverage. I was surprised to learn that a health system is much bigger than just hospitals and clinics. In fact, it includes private doctors, community health workers, and even our families who care for us when we’re sick. This is a complex system that involves a multitude of people and organizations working together to keep us healthy. The main goal of a health system is to make sure people stay healthy. This is achieved by focusing on three critical areas: improving health outcomes, responding to patients’ non-medical needs, and making healthcare affordable for everyone. As a student, I found it fascinating to learn about these important objectives. Additionally, I discovered that a health system has four key functions: creating resources, delivering services, financing, and stewardship. Stewardship, in particular, is the function that ensures that the whole system runs smoothly and that everyone is working together to maintain the health of the population. This is similar to the role of a ship’s captain, who must oversee the vessel and make sure that it is headed in the right direction.
Watching the video about the introduction to health systems helped me gain a deeper understanding of how important health systems are and the amount of work required to ensure that everyone receives the care they need. It was intriguing to see how everything fits together, and I am now more appreciative of the many people and organizations involved in keeping us healthy.
