What is the importance of material management in the laboratory and in your life?

Material management is the process of planning, organizing, and controlling the flow of materials from its initial purchase until its final utilization. It incorporates the activity of inventory control, storage, and distribution. It has a primary goal which is to ensure that the right quantity of materials is available at the right time. Effective material management is vital to the success of any organization. It can help to optimize the use of resources, reduce waste, and improve efficiency and profitability.

Material management is important in the laboratory to ensure that materials and supplies needed for laboratory tests are available when required thus, avoiding delays. It also ensures that the laboratory utilizes its resources efficiently, minimizing waste, and reducing costs. It enables the laboratory to have sufficient storage which minimizes the risk of contamination. The safety of laboratory staff and personnel and preventing accidents can be ensured by having adequate personal protective equipment (PPEs). With this, we can comply with laboratory standards and regulations such as waste management and disposal.

As a college student, our daily costs are crucial to us and we really need to have good budgeting skills. In using material management, we can ensure that we have a balanced budget for school fees, needs, and wants. I really experienced having no allowance for a month because I have spent it all without thinking and considering what is more important. And yes, material management can help me today to prevent myself from being zero balanced. It can help me assess what really is important so that my allowance can be used whenever something important comes up.
