Material management system is a system designed for the efficient and effective handling, storing, organizing, procurement, and control of resources and materials in the clinical laboratory. It is utilized to keep track of the materials being used and the storage of it in a clean, secure, and organized manner. An effective and efficient material management system is crucial for a clinical laboratory as it provides various benefits to the lab personnel, administration, and the organization as a whole. The application of an efficient and effective material management system would provide:

    1. Inventory Management and Traceability of Materials
    2. Availability and On-time Delivery of Materials
    3. Quality Control of Materials
    4. Data-based Decision-Making
    5. Cost Optimization
    6. Ease of Procurement Process

Essentially, A library catalogue and a material management system works similarly in the sense that it provides information on the storage and availability of the needed material. A material management system is needed to ensure the inventory and materials needed by the laboratory technician is readily available. It provides the clinical laboratory a tracker on the materials and would have an organization of how certain materials are stored and handled. Effective and efficient material management systems must be achieved to reduce the workload and hassle of finding the required material or substance in the storage room. In our homes, we can also apply a material management system in the sense of placing labels and attaching reminders of where specific materials could be found or must be placed. It could also serve as a grocery list on items that are needed to be bought.

The video below provides additional information about the importance of having a material management system in the clinical laboratory, and its components.
