Health Information System: My Final Takeaway

When I first heard about the Health Information System, my mind automatically wandered on the application of computer systems and databases in the management of a clinical laboratory. That was only my initial impression about the course. But along the way, I witnessed that the role Health Information System plays in the healthcare industry is beyond what I expected it to be. It doesn’t solely tackle the technical concepts that a medical technology student must learn. It also provides knowledge and recognition on the importance of quality, performance, communication, and accountability in the field of work in particular, and in the realm of life in general. I obtained a significant understanding on how an information system works in the laboratory, and how it aids the employees in handling the data and information of the patients. As a person who is not very skilled in dealing with any form of communications technology, I appreciate this kind of innovation, wherein the workers are given the opportunity and platform to make the process more convenient, organized, accurate, and reliable.

If I may be asked about the lesson in this course that I like the most, I would say Material Management. I really enjoyed the calculation activities, which have enlightened me about the essentiality of conducting an inventory to monitor our resources well. The instructor provided several examples of real-life scenarios about managing our possessions, which I found funny at first (in a positive way, of course), especially the “counting of papers”. However, as we dwelt further into the topic, I stopped laughing because I realized that those kinds of analogies are the best representation of how we, students, can start applying the principle of Material Management as we go on the path of pursuing our goal of becoming an efficient medical technologist. Indeed, big things start from small beginnings.

As we finish this semester and as we go to the final chapter of our Health Information System journey, I hope we will be able to live out the substantial learning that we have gained in this course. Thank you, MT14. God Bless, everyone. May we ace these upcoming exams!
