Anatomical Positions (Planes, Sections, and Body Orientation)

Planes and Sections
1. Sagittal Plane – it cuts the body longitudinally or lengthwise down to its midline, dividing it into right and left parts.
2. Frontal (coronal) Plane – longitudinally divides the body into anterior and posterior sections.
3. Transverse Plane – runs horizontally is divided into superior and inferior.

Body Orientation

1. Anterior: Frontal view of the body (at or near the front)
2. Posterior: Backside of the body (back view)
3. Midline: An imaginary vertical line dividing the body evenly (at its center).
4. Lateral: Away from the midline (side view)
5. Medial: Closer to the midline (side view)
6. Superior: Looking up at a structure (bird’s-eye view)
7. Inferior: Looking up from the bottom of a structure (away from the head/lower part)
8. Superficial: Located close to the body’s surface
9. Deep: Far from the body’s surface
10. Proximal: Closer to a structure’s origin
11. Distal: Further away from the point of origin
