Dr. Ben S. Malayang III’s vision of Whole Person Education is nothing short of revolutionary, and I wholeheartedly believe in its transformational power. In an era where education often feels confined to textbooks and exams, his definition of education as a holistic process that builds competence, character, and faith is truly a breath of fresh air. As a student of Silliman University, I find this inspiring because Whole Person Education goes beyond the mere acquisition of knowledge and skills; it strives to mold individuals into well-rounded, compassionate, and spiritually aware human beings. This approach aligns perfectly with my aspirations as a student, as it emphasizes not only academic excellence but also personal growth and moral development.

Silliman’s emphasis on interaction in various venues, including the classroom, the Church, the cultural center, the athletic court, and the community, has enriched my educational experience in countless ways. It has taught me that learning doesn’t occur in isolation but thrives when it engages with diverse perspectives, cultural values, and real-world challenges. Furthermore, Dr. Malayang’s mention of the silent curriculum – that unspoken but vital aspect of education focused on integrity, leadership, and faith strikes me as a fundamental truth. These qualities are essential not only for success in one’s profession but also for becoming a responsible and empathetic member of society.

I believe that Whole Person Education will empower a lot of students to not only excel academically but also to be a more compassionate and socially conscious individuals. It has taught me to appreciate the innate beauty of diversity and the importance of empathy, which are critical qualities in today’s globalized world. Dr. Malayang’s belief in the United Board’s potential to promote Whole Person Education across Asia is inspiring. Collaboration among different institutions can create a ripple effect of positive change into education.

In a rapidly changing and interconnected world, the ability to see oneself in others, as Dr. Malayang pointed out, is indeed a great challenge. Whole person education equips us with the tools to meet this challenge, fostering understanding and cooperation that completely transcends cultural and religious boundaries. As a student of Silliman, I am grateful for the institution’s commitment to whole person education, and I believe it will prepare me not only for a successful career but also to be a responsible and compassionate global citizen.Furthermore, I am convinced that Whole Person Education is not just relevant but essential. It is not just a philosophy; it is a life-changing experience that empowers us to be globally-aware individuals in the world that we inhabit.
