Dr. Ben S. Malayang III, the twelfth president of Silliman University, without doubt, entailed salient contributions under his leadership, he was able to implement the university’s 5 C’s that have been fully recognized over the course of time. He emphasized the importance of learning WPE or Whole Person Education as well when he stated that it is an education committed to the total human development of a student, a learner transcending from the usual person he or she was before, and transforming into someone who is more progressed, who is better, improved, and exceptional. With a higher ability to serve, to live, learn, do, and see God – by this statement, I am beckoned by the notion that this course subject will indeed help me navigate in the vast aspects of learning, spiritual, emotional, physical, physiological, etc. towards becoming a cognizant individual, endowed with productivity, sagacity, and wisdom, that eventually leads to satiation, or holistically complete. A person who can contribute to national development and be a young citizen with the goal and voice to uphold change in the community. Moreover, with the program being committed to surfacing the presence of Christian faith, I believe students like me will be able to succeed in shaping and honing ourselves in a way the essence of humane values will entwine in their lives in perpetuity. In the near future, when we will finally be able to attain success and face our own careers in life, we do not limit ourselves to just being typical alumni, but professionals who will bring forth transformative change, for the well-being of society and the environment. Malayang stated that ‘being associated with Christian institutions should not be an impediment – because the challenge will always be the extent to which higher education institutions can usher in opportunities for our students to enter into dialogue so that they are able to see how others are also struggling to have their faith in the world. That ability to see yourself in others is, I think, one of the great challenges of education in our time and in our region.’ Higher education institutions affiliated with Christianity should not prevent people from attending or working there, regardless of their own religious beliefs. Inclusivity is important for people of all faiths to be able to come together and learn from each other, and higher education institutions should provide opportunities for this to happen.

I am hopeful and confident that at the end of the semester, I can say that I am a creative critical thinker, effective communicator, independent, transformative Christian witness, and a reflective lifelong learner.
