In his interview, Dr. Ben S. Malayang III, the former President of Silliman University, talks about the importance of whole person education. He describes it as education that can help people become smarter and more connected to their faith. Dr. Malayang also suggests that the United Board, which has many colleges and universities across Asia, especially in ASEAN countries, can help create rules and ways to measure how well this well-rounded education is working. This would not only look at what’s taught in class, but also at how it makes students better at what they do, helps them become good people, and deepens their faith.
He also says that being part of a Christian institution shouldn’t stop this process. He also talks about how important it is for students from different religions to talk to each other and understand each other. But he admits that teachers might need to change the way they teach to fully embrace this kind of education.
In conclusion, Dr. Malayang believes that whole person education involves building competence, character, and faith in God simultaneously. He also believes that the United Board can assist colleges and universities in integrating whole person education by establishing standards, accreditation systems, and fostering dialogue. He suggests that faculty members may need support in transitioning to new teaching approaches that emphasize whole person education.
