[Reflection] Whole Person Education: The Goals and the ChallengesThrough an interview conducted by the United Board, Dr. Ben S. Malayang III, the twelfth president of Silliman University, was able to share some of his insights and goals for whole person education. He describes WPE as an education that builds students up and transforms them into people with a higher ability to live, with God in the center of their lives. By focusing on areas other than academics, institutions are able to shape individuals capable of leading and serving others in their respective profession and communities.
It’s important to note the role of the United Board as an organization that links hundreds of HEI’s across the whole of Asia. According to Dr. Ben S. Malayang III, the United Board is instrumental as a partner institution in a sense that we were able to develop methods on how to measure and compare ourselves with other institutions in their ability to make “whole persons” out of students. Using this comparison, institutions are able to make critical and reflective changes to the whole person education curriculum to enhance and complement the attributes of students. Of course, these changes not only concern those who will be educated but the educators and faculty as well. In order to achieve institutional visions and produce globally-comparable professionals, it requires the collective effort of everyone involved in the process.
