Reflection to the Interview with Dr. Ben S. Malayang III on Whole Person Education
Submitted by: Lauren Nicole E. Calderon
It’s good to hear that a former President of the school I am studying in sees education as a nurturing aspect rather that a competitive battlefield—that he sees education as not only intellectual growth but also an opportunity for students to develop their personality along with the aspects of spiritual conduct. Reading that both Mr. Malayang and the United Board are actively imposing a modernized learning curriculum in today’s world of education with the intent of honing the students’ character, integrity, and faith is quite refreshing and comes off as music to a student’s ear. However, they do state that faculties and staffs adapting to this new way of learning—or essentially teaching—is something that they cannot immediately adjust to the moment it is implemented. It truly takes time, patience, and commitment to redirect themselves to a new and improved curriculum for them to be able to train their students to become the greatness they aspire to be and the person these students truly want to become. As the younger generation is the instrument of our future, it is imperative that we hone them to become the leader that they want to become in the future. May it be a leader with great and big responsibilities, and may it also be the simpler type of leader that helps people out every now and then because they truly just want to extend compassion to their neighbors. From what I have read in this article, I believe that this is the goal that Whole Person Education and the United Board is trying to achieve.
