ARTICLE : Whole Person Education: The Goals and the ChallengesDr. Ben S. Malayang III, the 12th president of Silliman University, concurred that “Whole person education to me is an education that builds competence, builds character, and builds faith in God, together.” Whole person education, in the Philippines, is not seen as a significant aspect in universities. Although there are subjects embedded in the curriculum that are somewhat similar to Whole person education, like Edukasyon Sa Pagpapakatao (ESP) during junior high school, I do think that this part is sort of neglected. Based on my knowledge, Silliman University is the only educational institution that applies Whole person education in the curriculum. With this, I understand Dr. Malayang III’s patronization of implementing Whole person education in Asian universities, especially in the Philippines. I am truly amazed by how adamant he is about his advocacy and instilling good character, promoting faith in God, and enhancing the importance of leadership skills to further the learners’ competence. Moreover, it is also quite noteworthy that he stressed the significance of the United Board of Nations as a bridge to successfully develop learners to be whole persons. In summary, I genuinely praise Dr. Malayang III’s stance on the significance of Whole person education in institutions of Asia to shape youth that are highly competent, God-fearing, and of praiseworthy morals.
