𝙉𝙖𝙢𝙚: 𝙆𝙖𝙧𝙮𝙡𝙡𝙚 𝙅𝙚𝙙 𝘿𝙪𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙖𝙨 𝘽𝙎𝙈𝙏 𝙄𝙄
𝙂𝙀 10 – 𝘿𝘿: 𝙒𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙚 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙀𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧?

When I landed my feet on the port of Dumaguete, entered the vast halls of Silliman, and treaded past the side of enormous Acacia trees, I realized the detours in our lives certainly lead us to the most beautiful destinations where we are called to be. Day by day, as I continue to perceive my environment inside the campus, an exceptional feature I have always noticed and admired of the Silliamanians, both faculty and staff, is the CAPE that they wear every day. This cape is being manifested with competence, character, and compassion as they deal, interact, and socialize with other individuals, both on and off campus.

The C in cape stands for Civil; everyone, even inside the dorm I am staying at or the Silliman staff I get to ask for help with, maintains a courteous and respectful demeanor in interactions. Being civil, it shows respecting someone for who they are, albeit we are not in close terms or related. I value and appreciate this kind of attitude so much.

The A stands for appreciative; my friends, acquaintances, and even one of our janitors at the dorm appreciate small things whenever I have the chance to give even small things to them. Being appreciative is something a Sillimanian entails, which involves valuing the contributions and qualities of others.

The P stands for professionalism and passion; the former is that Sillimanians conduct themselves with integrity and excellence in school and at work. I see this from my teachers, who are also products of SU. The latter is passion, because I know that a Sillimanian is molded by his or her holistic development built in various aspects and a student’s passion to continue each day, quenching the thirst for learning despite many impediments.

The last, E, is ethicality. The majority of the Silliamanian community, which I know and am acquainted with, adheres to a strong sense of moral principles and ethical conduct. This is due to the fact that we are treated with excessive solicitude by CHS instructors, fostering the value of education in a Christian orientation and thus offering reflective lifelong learners and transformative Christian witnesses.
This is why I believe a Sillimanian is someone who has a pure heart, one who embodies competence, character, and faith, from the first day of school and for the rest of his or her lifetime. The unique Silliman education is a metamorphosis that hones us from our baby steps towards flying and reaching for the stars. A Sillimanian has a perspective willing to serve the community as an independent, critical thinker who will soon be productive citizens of this country who will strive to create a remarkable change for the world’s betterment.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀?

What makes us different from other universities is the way we visualize a future filled with active Sillimanian professionals. An example of this is Hibalag 2023, where I get to witness different organizations filled with different people, all having similar goals. I realized that there are youths who are not indolent; there are youths wanting for achievements, progression, and accomplishments—and this is a powerful vessel that one should have. Now that I see great students, I know they will become virtuous leaders tomorrow.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐚𝐧?

My view of the mental aspect of man is that he or she is a multifaceted and complex individual who is interlaced with other dimensions of human existence, such as emotional, social, and spiritual; moreover, there are many schools of thought that shape our thoughts, behaviors, and experiences, which are vital to our being uniquely humans and influence our overall and holistic well-being.
