Reflection Essay #1: What is a Sillimanian?

I used to think that when you join Silliman University, you are already “a Sillimanian” and that’s a big recognition or title for others because Silliman University is one of the outstanding institutions in the Philippines. Well, technically you are, yet, to be the truest definition of “a Sillimanian”, it takes quite some standards to prove that you are. To emphasize, a true Sillimanian holds excellent competence, satisfactory character, and a blazing faith regardless life’s unexpected turns.

Not only that, I believe that a true Sillimanian upholds educational excellence for Silliman University is known for its commitment to academic excellence, and many Sillimanians value and prioritize their education. Secondly, a true Sillimanian has cultural awareness and community engagement. Sillimanians often have a strong sense of cultural awareness and appreciation, given the university’s emphasis on multiculturalism and diversity. Furthermore, The university encourages community service and social responsibility, so many Sillimanians may be actively involved in community projects and service initiatives. Thirdly, I believe true Sillimanians not only excel on their academics, but also has the capability to outstand in the field of sports and arts. Lastly, I strongly believe that a true Sillimanian recognizes the Via, Veritas Vita as a guiding principle towards navigating life.

In conclusion, a Sillimanian is about embodying a set of values and principles that not only lead to personal success but also contribute to the betterment of our educational community. It’s about a genuine love for learning, diligence, respect, empathy, adaptability, and responsibility.
