Reflection Essay #2: What makes you Sillimanian?

As an individual, joining Silliman University and committing myself to the institution’s standards made me realize that to be a Sillimanian isn’t a linear journey to be called as one. Being a Sillimanian carries both a formal and a deeper, more personal meaning. It signifies a commitment to the educational and cultural values of that institution.

Being a Sillimanian means actively engaging in academic pursuits. This includes attending classes, participating in discussions, completing assignments, and striving for excellence in your studies. Academic engagement is the core responsibility of a student. Furthermore, every institution has its unique values, mission, and culture. To be called a Sillimanian, you should align with and respect these values. This includes following the institution’s code of conduct, respecting its traditions, and contributing positively to its community.

Beyond academics, being a Sillimanian often involves participating in campus life. This can include involvement in clubs, organizations, sports teams, and extracurricular activities. Active engagement in campus life enriches your experience and helps you contribute to the institution’s community. Also, as a Sillimanian, you must show respect for your fellow students, professors, and staff. Respectful interactions are crucial for fostering a positive learning environment and building a sense of community within the institution.

In essence, being called a Sillimanian goes beyond the formalities of enrollment. It encompasses a deep engagement with the institution’s educational, cultural, and ethical values, and it signifies a commitment to personal and academic growth within the context of that institution’s community.
