Reflection Essay A: “What is a Sillimanian?”

A Sillimanian is a term used to describe an individual who is intimately connected to Silliman University, a prestigious institution located in Dumaguete City, Philippines. To understand what it means to be a Sillimanian, we must delve into the unique qualities and characteristics that define them. A Sillimanian is a learner, a seeker of knowledge, and an enthusiast of intellectual growth. They are students who have chosen Silliman University as their academic home. Within the serene campus, they engage in a wide range of academic pursuits, from the sciences to the arts, guided by a dedicated faculty. This pursuit of knowledge extends beyond the confines of the classroom; Sillimanians are known for their curiosity and a thirst for learning that lasts a lifetime.

However, being a Sillimanian is not solely about academics. It encompasses a profound sense of community and belonging. Sillimanians come from diverse backgrounds, not only from different parts of the Philippines but from around the world. This diversity is celebrated, fostering an environment of multiculturalism and understanding. Bonds formed within the university often become lifelong friendships. A Sillimanian knows the value of respect, tolerance, and inclusivity. Moreover, bring a Sillimanian is not always easy. It comes with challenges – late-night studying, exams, and sometimes homesickness. But these challenges make Sillimanians stronger and more resilient. They learn to overcome obstacles and keep moving forward. To be a Sillimanian is to be part of a remarkable tradition, a legacy of excellence, and a community that inspires and empowers.
