MT14 – LEC AAA laboratory information system (LIS) is a computer or software system in healthcare. They collect specific test samples, stores, analyzes, and processes to manage and track various features. They collect blood or urine to examine and analyze to identify any abnormalities. They input the results into a computer-based system. Based on the LIS meaning and definition, they process and further analyze it before delivering it to the doctor and patient).
All the information of the patient that went to the laboratory is stored. A LIS stores information and data as a medical record for future use or reference.
A laboratory information system’s three main parts are sample tracking, protocol execution, and storage management. Imagine a lab where various researchers keep track of samples using a variety of methods, such as pen and paper or a huge spreadsheet. It would be very difficult to ensure that human error had not harmed your data. Data gathering errors and inconsistencies, such as missing findings, can make any issue worse.
Sample tracking is the first component of a laboratory information system. They record the sample’s ID, source, collection date, and quantification information at the time of the sample’s initial accession. When the lab sample moves through its workflow, it records extra data. This information is likewise saved in the laboratory information system. Comprises test results, sample data that was derived, and metrics for time-based research.
A laboratory information system records and tracks information particular to each lab sample. As well as information on who has interacted with the sample and where it has been throughout its use. A sample could be paired up with other samples being tested in the laboratory or added to a batch. Lab samples have an exterior barcode label applied in the test tube and a chemical “index” to distinguish samples from other samples in the pool.
Protocol execution is the second component of a laboratory information system. Despite who is processing the sample or conducting the test, one must ensure that each lab technician follows the precise steps to produce an accurate and consistent result. By digitizing the processes in procedures and protocols, the laboratory information system facilitates standardization among the laboratory staff. This guarantees that every member of the lab staff carries out the right procedures, in the right sequence when putting a sample through a test.
The storage management is the third component of a laboratory information system. Starting with each lab sample, the LIMS keeps track of where the sample tube or vial is kept in a specific box (for instance, slot A1 or B5). The system then maintains track of which rack and which drawer each box is. Additionally, the system keeps track of the area and shelf that the freezer is in.
Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) serves as an all-inclusive software solution. By centralizing procedures like sample tracking, protocol execution, and storage structure, it simplifies and standardizes data management. Samples are given distinctive identities by LIMS, maintaining uniformity and lowering data entry errors. It makes it possible for researchers to adhere to predetermined protocols. By automating experiments and enabling the documentation of errors. Additionally, LIMS optimizes sample retrieval and storage, reducing the possibility of handling errors. By offering these features, LIMS improves data integrity, speeds up workflow, and aids in data correctness. Making it an important tool for effective laboratory operations.Sources:
