REFLECTION PAPER ON ROMANS CHAPTER 1-3Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of Romans center on the unrighteousness of man, how one is saved by the Grace of God, and how salvation is attained through faith in Jesus Christ. First, chapter 1 of Romans explores the letter of Paul addressed to the people of Rome. During this period, rising tension between the Jewish and Gentile believers was a central issue. Paul emphasized in his letter the meaning, significance, and application of righteousness. He further said that sin had continuously taken over individuals, causing God to be enraged. The wickedness of man is worsening. It is apparent in their worship and idolatry of false gods, engagement in condemned sexual activities, and such. Despite their knowledge of the truth, the people continue to suppress, ignore, and pay no mindfulness. Nevertheless, Jesus Christ provided men an opportunity to redeem themselves. As I’ve read this section, I am truly amazed by God’s gratefulness and mercy. Moreover, I have also noticed the relevance of this chapter in our present century. Often, I find myself committing unrighteous acts despite knowing it’s wickedness. I realized how easy it is to alter the truth in order to trick ourselves into believing that our sinful actions are not as shameful and corrupted.
Second, chapter 2 of the book of Romans discusses the misapprehensions of righteousness and salvation. Apostle Paul emphasized that virtuousness is seen in the heart and spirit, not in the actions, thoughts, and sacrifices of man. He further exemplified this by comparing different individuals with varied backgrounds. One is an immoral man who does not abide by God. This person cannot receive salvation due to their continuous rejection of the truth and God. Another is a “justified” man who condemns such acts committed by the immoral individual. Thus, they raise themselves on a pedestal as ethically superior and scrutinize these peoples’ decisions, principles, and lives in general. However, they also suppress the truth and sin like an immoral man. According to God’s truth, they will still be judged accordingly and similarly to those he deemed less than himself. Lastly is the religious individual equipped with exceptional knowledge about God’s word. However, they still do not keep the law of Christ in their heart. With this, they still commit acts of sin. All of these individuals are equally judged by God for no one is exempted by His standards. In this chapter, Apostle Paul emphasizes that knowledge of the law, not acting morally, and continuously doing the same acts of sin are testaments that people are suppressing the truth about God and have become unfaithful. With this, salvation is not redeemed. Thus, it is important that we not only understand God and His word but also engrave it in our hearts, living according to it day by day.
The third chapter of Romans reveals that the promise of God is firm, unchanging, and true. Due to God’s mercy and grace, He gave us a chance and sent Jesus Christ, His only son, to die for our sins. In doing so, we can redeem salvation and live eternally along His side despite our trespasses. This promise is never changing and does not discriminate against any individual in our world. Reflecting on this, I feel overwhelmed and incredibly grateful for God’s goodness and His love for us. It is truly unconditional, everlasting, and constant.
