Guy Hall, built in 1918, was one of the buildings occupied by Japanese troops during World War II. After its recognition as a university, Silliman continued to receive from the Presbyterian Board and the American Board (now the United Church Board for World Ministries) grants for land, buildings and equipment.
Dr. Silliman and Mr. William Guy of St. Louis pledged $15,000 to make two dormitories for boys. The present building (Guy Hall) was named in honor of Katherine Lemoine Guy by her husband. The construction of the Guy Hall was being rushed in time for the opening of the new school year in March 1918. Upon returning from Furlough Dr. Hibbard wrote that there would be a dormitory able to house 250 boys that would cost $12,000.
Instead of having I separate buildings, it was made to one building with two wings so that it would be more economical. In 1918 the main Silliman campus, covered thirty acres consisting of nine school buildings and five residence. The construction of the pier stimulated interest where Dr. Hibbard secured an area of 12,500 square meters through the special grant from New York Women’s Board.
1926 and 1927 were the notable construction year. The first science wing and the new library completed, which is the second section of Guy Hall. Mr. Guy offered half of the estimated cost of $17,250 in early 1925. But it was sent up to $20,000 not including $2,500 for a water and sanitation system.
