The origins of Silliman University Church trace back to the arrival of American Presbyterian missionaries in the Philippines in 1899. In January 1901, the Dumaguete Mission Station was established, and seven months later, Dr. and Mrs. David and Laura Hibbard founded Silliman Institute. Initially, regular services were intertwined with early classes, and an evangelical congregation in Dumaguete emerged around 1903. However, it wasn’t until December 6, 1911, that the Presbyterian Church of Dumaguete was officially established, later becoming known as the Dumaguete Evangelical Church, comprising both the town’s residents and the Silliman community. In 1916, due to the challenges of maintaining a single structure for two congregations with differing ministries and languages, the two groups reorganized as separate congregations, with Dr. Paul Doltz leading the Silliman Student Church. This entity evolved into the Silliman University Church, a place of worship welcoming individuals of all denominations and affiliations, with a strong focus on providing spiritual enrichment for Sillimanians. Despite its Presbyterian roots, the church promotes religious freedom, encouraging individuals to explore and strengthen their faith, ultimately translating it into active commitments.

The church has served as a spiritual and communal center for generations of students and residents. Its iconic architecture reflects a blend of American and Filipino influences, embodying the university’s commitment to a diverse and inclusive community. Over the years, Silliman University Church has been a space for worship, reflection, and community gatherings, contributing to the holistic education and personal growth of all those who have walked its hallowed halls. It stands as a symbol of the university’s dedication to nurturing not only academic excellence but also the spiritual well-being of its constituents.
