The Silliman University motto embedded in the school’s bright red logo embodies campus life here in the university–Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Silliman’s goal is to develop a whole person in a God-centered approach and in a supportive school setting. The motto, a reference to the ever-famous John 14:6: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life,” captures the university’s wish to develop well-rounded students within a nurturing and God-centered environment.
“Via,” also known as “The Way,” highlights the importance of individual growth. The Latin word “Veritas,” which means “The Truth,” stresses the continuous pursuit of academic dedication and the real truth. “Vita,” often known as “The Life,” emphasizes holistic development that goes beyond academics and includes character development, personal growth, and community involvement.
In an article written by Dr. Everett L. Mendoza (formally the Vice President for Academic Affairs and a Professor at the Divinity School) says, “The founders of Silliman fervently hoped that everyone who enters its portals won’t leave its halls without having found the way to God, without having plumbed into the depth of truth about God, and without having discovered and being enveloped with the confidence and joy of life-in-God on earth. But there’s always the chance that Silliman may have lost its way, may have bartered away truth about God for other truths, and may have made God unnecessary in the pursuit of a good life.”
Essentially, “Via, Veritas, Vita” showcases Silliman University’s commitment to producing well-rounded graduates who are not only morally upright but also intellectually gifted, making a good impact on society in a supportive and values-driven atmosphere.
